Told to me by Laura Ann Mc Clemons:
Grandpa had his first press in trade for printing flyers in his garage during WI. After the war he bought the print shop "Maple Leaf Press", on Gratiot and 10 mile in Roseville, Michigan. He kept all his paper and inks in the basement and did not like for the grandchildren to go down there. So in order for him to keep us from going down there he told us that he had a bear down there. He would either have one of our uncles go down or he would and make growling noises like a bear. Needless to stay we never did go in the basement.
Grandpa was never without a song. He was always either singing or whistling. His favorite saying was that "he was fit as a fiddle and ready for love". To this day many of the grandchildren still sing the songs that he left us to remember. We now even sing them to our grandchildren and smile because we think of him every time we do.
Grandpa was also a man of his word. If he made a promise he keep it. After grandma died in 1971 he vowed never to go to Hawaii. It was one of there dreams to visit every state in the United States. They did, all but Hawaii. He said that if he could not go with Nora he would not go at all. Grandpa was also proud of the fact that he had a drivers license till the day that he passed away. Grandpa passed away at his home in Mattoon, Illinois. He had his three surviving children present.
Harold also wanted to be in the military but when he went in for his physical they found out that he was deaf in one ear and would not take him. So he went to Canada to enlist in their army but was told that he could not enlist because he wasn't a citizen of Canada. After that he received a hand written letter from the Queen telling him how thankful she was that he wanted so badly to serve in the military.
